Commercial Solicitor in the Falkland Islands

Solicitors firm based in Stanley in the Falkland Islands recruiting a solicitor to their small team.

A new role has come up and details are below.

This is a small practice seeking a non- contentious/commercial lawyer to further develop this area of their business.

Spec from the firm as follows:

"Our Firm commenced approximately 5 years ago and has continued to grow and develop ever since. We have now reached a point where to continue to develop we need an additional lawyer to increase capacity. The use of lawyers and legal services is still relatively new in the Falkland Islands and as such development of work comes from explaining to clients what is possible and why legal services are required. Traditionally the economy has been based largely on work undertaken by Government. However, in recent years things are changing with the economy growing with increasing numbers of commercial links around the world, particularly as a result of the oil explorations and discovery of such in the surrounding waters. In addition there is a significant international fishing industry and a growing tourism industry as well as a developing private sector. Ideally the candidate will have at least 3 years experience of commercial or commercial property law and be prepared to undertake and supervise non-contentious matters generally. The majority of the residential conveyancing is undertaken by a legal assistant but the candidate will be expected to undertake some conveyancing and wills as well as help develop the commercial work undertaken (please note that experience in all areas is by no means essential - but the nature of the location tends to result in a fairly wide variety of work). Marketing in the Falkland Islands is primarily by meeting people and soliciting. Therefore the candidate must be prepared to participate in the various social activities and get involved in the community. Although the population is small, it provides a wide range of activities with plenty of outdoor pursuits available.

The firm will offer a competitive remuneration package with a generous bonus based on income generated and overall benefit for the firm. A good work life balance with most people living within a few minutes of work with no rush hour commute. For those that want it, potentially long term prospects in a financial stable and growing firm or just the opportunity to be able to put international legal experience on your CV and a chance to say that you have been to a part of the world few others have seen.

We also guarantee that you will see penguins..

The Independent wrote a good article some years ago about life in the Falklands - worth reading. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/windswept-remotewho-would-want-to-live-in-the-falkland-islands-8577203.html .

The recruitment process is fairly straightforward - the firm will review CVs and then invite you to "attend" a Skype interview with the senior partner.

If you are interested please let me know - email preferred if possible to start please because we get a lot of queries about offshore roles like this one. At the moment we do not have a figure for salary levels. Start date is as and when.
